OPHELIA IS DYEING
This collection is inspired by the novel “Ophelia” by Lisa Klein, in which she re-tells Shakespeare’s Hamlet from Ophelia’s perspective. In this version she stages her own suicide and escapes dressed as a man. The themes I am extracting from this story are the contrast between the morbidity of the seemingly dead body and the nature surrounding her. As well as the act of using one’s agency to break free, by appropreating menswear garments. The collection is made out of natural-fiberes fabrics, sourced conciously and hand-dyed with self-made natural dyes.

RESEARCH & VALUE OF NATURAL DYES

The garments are made out of bio-degradable, natural fibres, some are coloured with organic dyes, using techniques that allow the product to last and can easily be separated and re-cycled.Controlling the process gives me creative freedom. Enabling me to achieve the colours and patterns I want; I have ensured influence over the look of the collection. No two dye baths are ever the same, giving each batch “built in authenticity” no one else can duplicate. The shades won from plant-based dyes rarely clash or jar the eye. Their natural harmony is a special kind of perfection. Dying a garment brings a sense of freedom with it. As much as one tries to control every element of the process, there will always be an element of risk involved. Accepting error to be part of the process and adding to the quality of the garment, releases some of the pressure put on the designer, externally and by themselves. Nature takes over and produces an outcome of organic and natural beauty, a quality unachievable with a synthetic substitute. I am using the dyes to tell a story. They symbolize Ophelia lying in the water, surrounded by nature. Dyeing endowes the garments with nature’s beauty. As means of immersing myself into the process, the pieces have been brought to life and carry my energy and humanness.
