GRACIOUS STUDIO
SPRING
Sandro Botticielli’s 'La Primavera', depicts the Three Graces and Flora seemingly weightless. Outside of the painting their silhouettes, dressed in flowing gowns and surrounded by flowers, would be out of balance. This capsule collection explores their 'Impossible Pose', as well as the ethereal qualities of spring.
THE IMPOSSIBLE POSE

When one looks at the structure behind the figures’ poses, one realizes that their body weights are tilted too far forward and away from their feet. If the three women stood in this composition in a world that abides by the rules of gravity, they would fall forward.
The organic line taken from the outline of the left Grace flows diagonally down the front. This creates the illusion of motion.
HAND STITCHING - THE VALUE OF TEXTILES

Textiles are an important element for building a narrative around the body. I am exploring the ‘Impossible Pose’ in the form of textile manipulation.I have translated this concept through multiple ways. On the one hand, I am using corsets with exaggerated hips tilted to the front and shoulders tilted to the back. This creates the illusion of movement and visually distorts the wearer’s pose. On the other hand, I am implementing the theme of the “impossible”, by creating a structured garment out of delicate fabric only. A combination of six layers of hand quilted silk, achieves the structure necessary to create the silhouettes.I utilize craft as means of immersing myself into my work. Investing my time and “humanness” elevates the product’s spiritual value, as it now carries the maker’s energy.
HAMMERING FLOWERS

Flowers represent spring’s ethereal quality. Happering them onto silk captures their beauty and leaves an echo of their shape, colour and scent. This techniques enhances the value of the present moment, as it is fleeting like the seasons.
